Is Airplane! appropriate for an 11 y/o girl to watch? I seem to think so, but her mother/my GF feels otherwise. I saw it when I was about that age, and I’m no worse off than any of you folks...

Personally, I think it’s time for her to learn some good slapstick and quick retorts (e.g. “Don’t call me Shirley”).

Eh, you really want to explain "I picked a bad week to stop sniffing glue" to your GFs kid?

I don’t think it’s appropriate just yet. Or, you need to preface it with an explanation of the time its from (explaining the “I speak jive” scene stands out in my mind).

Granted, I was watching Monty Python’s Flying Circus at 13, so what do I know.

I love that movie, but some of the jokes about race and religion don’t really play well today, so I’m not sure it’s great for an 11 year old.

I think it’s mostly ok for kids but IIRC there’s brief boobs and some sex jokes?

Nice beaver aside, you might be better off trying T he Naked Gun instead (plus you can explain about OJ!)

Ah...yes, that makes good  sense..I’m viewing this through the lease of a 48 y/o that saw it in the 80's.

There are some jokes in there that probably aren’t appropriate for an 11 year old.

Isn’t there a scene where the autopilot can’t inflate and so the woman manually, uhhh blows him up?

Although I started showing my kids StarWars tonight, ages 5 and 7.

My parents had no problem letting me watch it at that age. But I was already profane by then.

Yeah same - I’m 52 and I think I saw it in the theater.  Times have changed, and now I cringe at some of the jokes.

Yes there is. I think that one of those things where either the 11 year old won’t get the joke (so it’s fine), or will, in which case the joke isn’t corrupting? I’m not a parent though.

That scene is exactly what came to my mind too. Not the only one in the movie, but it stuck out.

Screw it do it - kids at that age are exposed to way worse unfortunately. Explain it that way to the GF and make sure she knows that some of the jokes are probably not as funny to folks now. Trust me - she’ll call them out.

I would say go for it. An 11 year old already knows way more than what that movie will show. I had absolutely no limits on what I watched growing up in the 90s. If I had a question my parents usually told me just to look it up in the encyclopedia.

That’s about the age I was introduced to it, and other things like Blazing Saddles. I’d look at it as also a good opportunity to open the door to some other conversations about why things in movies like that are inappropriate today and how the lenses they are view through have changed. There is nothing more off color in airplane than novels that are assigned reading in middle school, and again, I remember some of those works also being taught with class discussions of race, class, sexual orientation, ECT... and how these were presented in the works vs. modern values.

Looked at another way, there is nothing in airplane an 11 year old hasn’t already seen or heard the likes of else where on social media and/or the school yard with peers, without or without any understanding of context.

Zoomers were/are watching South Park in elementary school. Airplane is literally PG. I think y’all should be fine, especially because much younger people watch Avengers, etc.

Even I watched it when I was around 10 , and there was a lot I “couldn’t watch” back then.

We did family movie night out on the lawn in the neighborhood a couple years back. I was kind of surprised at the selection given some of the adult references, and one instance of boobies flashing. Some of the references are pretty dated. Still, none of the little kids needed therapy afterward.

It’s not worth arguing with her mother though. Better off watching E.T. instead and saving this one for another time.

There is one very brief scene during a panic on board when a woman passes in front of the camera and shakes her bare boobs . Scene lasts maybe one or two seconds. You can see it here (with some others), link is NSFW.

You have to remember that a PG rating in the 80's is totally different then it is today. Most people who see this movie, viewed it on TV, where it is a bit sanitized. The original movie has some pretty profane jokes, heavy sexual innuendo and, uh, titties. I watched it with my 17 year old daughter a few years back, and was kind of caught off guard by the random scene of bare breasts just bouncing across the screen. I’d rather have my kids watch this movie than some violent PG-13 action film, but this movie, in its original format, is a bit jarring than most people realize.

Love Airplane, but I think most of the humor would go right over an 11 year-old’s head. I have 7 and 9 year old girls and they love The Blues Brothers. Never been to church, but that’s their favorite scene.

I saw it at eleven and really enjoyed the part where the guy unplugs the runway light and the swinging titties.

Have you ever seen a grown man naked, PyramidHat?

Our culture is a funny thing. Things that were fine back then are considered completely inappropriate these days. Take the “Get a hold of yourself” scene. I’m sure the GF really won’t appreciate that.

i don’t think so, but i would rewatch before airing.

A) some might have gone over my head,

B) I mostly saw a lot of those on comedy central that shortened and edited some raunchy bits out.

Hell yes show it to her. It’s a classic, light-hearted comedy, and compared to the shock-value garbage that’s considered entertainment today, Airplane! is practically an animated Disney movie.

In any relationship, it’s important to pick your battles. I think Airplane!  is close enough to the line of what’s acceptable that this is not a battle worth fighting. And I love Airplane! and saw it when I was a few years older than 11.

The TV edit is probably fine, but the regular movie? A big pair of bouncing boobs for some seconds. Some light jokes on race/religion. Otto pilot getting a 'blow up' job. More middle school I think.

So the consensus here is “we all watched it at that age and we turned out..... actually, you definitely shouldn’t let her watch it”

And don’t call me Shirley.
